It has been several months since I have written about our school.  Today I do so with great news that we have hired a new principal who will begin in the fall.  Our new principal’s name is Patrick Ryan and he is currently working as the athletic director for the Wendell, Idaho school district.  Patrick is an alumnus
of Catholic elementary school and of a Catholic college.  He is young and excited about beginning his administrative career and about being principal of a Catholic school.  I look forward to introducing him to the community sometime this summer.  I am grateful to Mrs. Beth Fuchser who has been our interim principal while teaching kindergarten.  She has done an outstanding job.  Our school is at the top of priorities for our parish.  This is not open to debate or to change because by virtue of our parish having a school it rises to the top of its priorities.  It can share the top of the priorities list with activities such as serving the poor and the education and ministry to our religious education programs and Sacramental preparation.  In light of its place in our list of priorities our school has to be able to articulate its purpose and meaning.  This year much of the purpose and meaning of a Catholic school has become clearer to me.  In the first place the school is an extension of the parish.  It does not exist or act alone.
The purpose of the school is the same as that of the parish which is the salvation of souls.  The school has to be aware that we are Catholic.  We are not a school that does Catholic things but a school that is fully aware of its Catholic identity and purpose. In order for the school to be firm in its identity as a Catholic school its faculty and staff must be Catholic, live the Catholic life and give purposeful witness to it.  Occasionally, as now, we will have a non-Catholic teacher whom we challenge to put into practice their own Christian beliefs.  A teacher must, at the very least, be a practicing Christian.  Academics, extracurricular activities and a familial environment are also important to our school but only because the faith, its transmission and modeling have taken first place and lay the groundwork for these others.  I am happy to say that though not perfectly, our school is on the way to living out these goals. This is important because sadly, there are large numbers of people who are alumni of Catholic schools who no longer practice the faith, who have no faith or who live contrary to the faith while still considering themselves Catholic.  There are many who consider themselves good Catholics or knowledgeable in the religion they reject because they went to Catholic school.  I hope and pray that our current student body and those who are yet to come will not fall into these sad statistics.  My hope and prayer are that they will find joy, meaning and purpose in our religion and boldly profess it and live it.  If you have elementary aged children or grandchildren, please think about enrolling them in our school.

Ya tiene tiempo que no escribo sobre la escuela.  Hoy lo hago con la buena noticia de que ya tenemos nuevo director que comenzará en otoño.  Su nombre es Patrick Ryan y actualmente está trabajando como director atlético del distrito de Wendell, Idaho. Patrick fue al colegio católico y también estudió en la universidad católica.  Es joven y está emocionado de comenzar su carrera
administrativa y de ser director de escuela Católica.  Me va dar gusto presentarlo a la comunidad este verano. Estoy muy agradecido con Mrs. Beth Fuchser que ha sido la directora y a la vez maestra de kindergarten.  Ha hecho un trabajo
admirable.  Nuestra escuela está por encima de las prioridades de nuestra parroquia.  Esto no es cuestión que se pueda argumentar o cambiar por que por la razón de que tenemos escuela se hace nuestra prioridad.  Claro que puede compartir su lugar de importancia con el servicio a los necesitados, educación religiosa y ministerio a los jóvenes y preparación sacramental.
Como nuestra prioridad principal la escuela tiene que poder articular su propósito y sus metas.  Este año el propósito y las metas de la escuela parroquial se me han aclarado.  En primer lugar, la escuela es extensión de la parroquia.  No existe ni actúa a solas. El propósito de la parroquia es la salvación de las almas.  La escuela debe estar consciente de que somos Católicos. No somos escuela que hace cosas Católicas, sino más bien una escuela consciente de su identidad y propósito Católico. Para que la escuela esté firme en su identidad como escuela Católica la facultad y equipo deben ser católicos, vivir la vida Católica y dar testimonio a la religión Católica.  De vez en cuando, como actualmente ahora, tendremos algún maestro que no es Católico. En dado caso se le exige vivir su vida Cristiana.  Un maestro debe ser por lo menos un Cristiano practicante.
La cuestión académica, actividades extraescolares y un ambiente familiar también son importantes para nuestra escuela, pero solo porque primero a la religión, a su trasmisión y ejemplo se les ha dado la prioridad.  Estoy contento de decir, que, aunque no perfectamente, nuestra escuela está en camino de lograr estas metas. Esto es importante porque tristemente, hay muchísimos que fueron a escuelas católicas y que ya no practican la religión, que no tienen fe o que se consideran Católicos y a la vez viven contrario a las enseñanzas de la Iglesia.  Se consideran buenos católicos porque fueron a la escuela Católica. Mi oración y mi esperanza son que nuestros alumnos y los que vendrán no caigan en estas tristes estadísticas.
Mi esperanza y mi oración son que encuentren el gozo, el significado y el propósito de nuestra religión y que la vivan con ganas. Si tienes hijos o nietos por favor piensa en traerlos a nuestra escuela.
