Lent is well on its way and hopefully we are settled into the routines and themes of this time. Lent is a time of penance. Penance is a response to the goodness of God with the full awareness that we do not deserve or earn His goodness, He simply gives it. Often it is heard of people taking on a penance to make up for something or to ask for something, that is not how it works. If our awareness and gratitude for God’s goodness is great then our penances can be great too bearing in mind that we are responding to God’s goodness not trading for it. The penances to which the Church calls us in Lent are mainly two. The first is to offer something as a sacrifice. We are familiar with this idea and some popular things to give up during Lent are social media, candy or alcohol. Our sacrifices can also include doing extra things such as holy reading or more time in
prayer. The second component of Lenten penance is almsgiving. Lent is a great time to support charities and the Church. Last week I proposed two options for almsgiving, one is St. Ann’s in Mud Lake. The construction of the new church after the fire resulted in a debt of $120,000. This is a lot of money for a community of about 50 families mostly employed on local farms and agricultural businesses. They need our help so please consider giving them a hand. The second option I offered is our school. Holy Rosary School belongs to all of us, we have inherited it and it is our collective responsibility. Our school is currently in great hands with our Principal Patrick Ryan and a great faculty. I am happy to say that all but one of our teachers are Catholic and they are all practicing their religion. You can see our teachers at Mass every Sunday. In our parochial school we can give a solid education, we can teach religion, faith, morals and virtue. Running a parochial school is expensive and we are in constant need of financial support. Giving to our parochial school not only makes it possible to keep the doors open today, but it is an investment in the future. Our goal is not to produce good Catholic school students. Our goal is to produce men and women of faith and virtue. These are two great options to fulfill the Lenten mandate of almsgiving, please consider them.

La cuaresma va marchando y ojalá ya nos hemos conformado a las rutinas y temas de este tiempo. La Cuaresma es un tiempo de penitencia. La penitencia es nuestra respuesta a la bondad de Dios conscientes de que no la merecemos ni la podemos ganar, El simplemente la da. Seguido se escucha de personas que toman una penitencia para pagar o pedir por algo, así no funciona. Si nuestra conciencia y agradecimiento por la bondad de Dios es grande entonces nuestra penitencia puede ser grande, siempre sabiendo que estamos respondiendo a la bondad de Dios,
y no estamos comerciando por ella. La penitencia a la cual nos llama la Iglesia en la Cuaresma toma dos formas. La primera es sacrificar algo. Estamos familiarizados con esta idea y unas cosas comunes que se sacrifican son redes sociales, dulces o alcohol. Nuestros sacrificios también pueden incluir hacer cosas extras como tomar más tiempo en la oración o el estudio de la religión. El segundo componente de penitencial cuaresmal es dar limosna. La cuaresma es un tiempo oportuno para dar a nuestras caridades preferidas y a la Iglesia. Les propongo dos opciones de donde dar su limosna y la primera es la Misión de Santa Ana en Mud Lake. La construcción del templo nuevo después del incendio los dejó con una deuda de más de $120,000. Esta es una gran cantidad para una comunidad de más o menos 50 familias que principalmente trabajan en los ranchos y empresas agrícolas. Necesitan de nuestra ayuda así que considera darles la mano. La segunda opción es nuestra escuela. La Escuela de Santo Rosario nos pertenece a todos,
la hemos heredado y es nuestra responsabilidad colectiva. Nuestra escuela actualmente está en buenas manos con el director Patrick Ryan y su facultad. Me da gusto decir que todos nuestros maestros, menos uno, son católicos y todos practican su religión. Nuestros maestros se pueden ver en la Santa Misa los Domingos. En nuestra escuela Podemos ofrecer una educación excelente que incluye la religión, la fe, la moralidad y la virtud. Manejar una escuela parroquial es muy costoso y estamos siempre en necesidad de apoyo económico.
Dando a nuestra escuela no sólo hace posible mantener las puertas abiertas para hoy, sino que es una inversión en el futuro. Nuestra meta no es formar buenos alumnos de escuela Católica. Nuestra meta es formar hombres y mujeres de fe y de virtud. Estas son dos opciones excelentes para cumplir la obligación de dar limosna, por favor tómalos en cuenta.
